After years of requests, for the first time in 26 years of teaching this course, Gail is offering this class in an all-online version. Save by not having any travel or accommodations fees!
The focus of this course is to help students develop a series of basic design skills. Students will create a portfolio of design work based on the design principles of dominance, proportion, balance, contrast, variety, harmony, repetition, movement, economy and space in relationship with the elements of art – dot, line, shape, color, value, and texture.
Students learn by looking at and practicing with a
range of different art medium (tools and materials) to try out concepts and also build their own individual visual glossary. A range of diverse artwork is viewed and discussed in the virtual classroom. Artwork exercises are analyzed to develop under-standing. The concepts from this course are easily adaptable to students’ individual work.
Originally developed by Gail for the City & Guilds of London program, this course is designed to take beginners to a level of competence where they are able to use a variety of art media to individually express theme ideas in a number of different ways.
The number of sessions scheduled (40) and the duration over which they are offered is a reflection of the breadth and depth of the content this course covers. Each class session is geared to the introduction of new material. The program assumes that each student will complete assigned work between sessions in order to stay abreast of the class. Those who successfully complete the program to the required standard will be awarded the Gail Harker Center for Creative Arts certificate for Level 3 Art and Design.
